A BRIEF CORRESPONDENCE RE: TODAY'S POSTING
| It has come to our attention that many typists on a certain private
"literary" message board had some problems with today's posting and expresed
such problems through "completely vehement and outraged posts" (now deleted)
about the Eyeshot editor's "credibility and what a black mark on the Internet
the whole site is." And so below we provide a bit of correspondence that
might clarify things a bit, especially for all you humorless Z-troopers
out there.

I'm actually fully clothed (and even beshoed) thanks to the autumn weather today in Iowa. I liked this one for the way it highlighted the "clothing" of so many stories. I'm not so sure I catch the implication of "intelligence test courage speak truth," and would welcome a more explicit explanation of whatever you're trying to say. * From: xxxxx xxxx
I'm relieved to hear you are fully clothed since the weather has taken a turn to the autumnal here in New England as well. I meant that in my opinion, I sometimes see things presented as "avant garde" and in the audience, everyone is silent, afraid to say, "I think that's rot" if that's what they believe. I wonder sometimes of what I'm looking at might be an intelligence test of sorts: is this for real or is it a joke? And I believe it is difficult to work up the courage at those times to speak the truth (one's own version thereof) and say, "I think this is rot." Hence the Emperor allusion. So I quickied up those five words, threw in some punctuation, and attempted to say the above in the form of "Gratuitous Sex." I'm not a simpleton and I don't disparage the avant garde or the risky at all. I'm not prudish (a Brooklyn goil so no New England influences here) and it wasn't the sex that bothered me. But, if that same story had been submitted to you with five more mundane and less sexy words, I wonder if it would have seemed interesting to you at all. It seems just as silly to me to find depth in a piece *because* it uses sexual words (and an interesting mix, too, when you look at it; why all the formal "correct" terms, but "pussy"?) as it would be to ignore depth in a piece for it sexual vocabulary. Cool - thanks for elaborating - I wouldn't take the thing so seriously.
I accepted it simply because I thought it was clever, and that it sort
of played with the traditional story form. In terms of the few words, I
particularly liked "syphilis" and sort of enjoyed the overall rhythm of
the lines and the insanity of it. One thing that's amazing about the web
is that I can accept a silly submission like this and post it and it costs
nothing to anyone throughout the world to see it - and that's another reason
I posted this one, because it really has no chance of seeing light anywhere
else, certainly not in print, and most sites would probably reject it too.
But I like to reward so-called "risk," especially when it's harmless and
silly and repeatedly uses the word "syphilis." I took it basically as a
strange joke with some underlying semi-elusive comment on the traditional
story form. But I wouldn't go so far as to call it "avant garde" or anything
french-sounding and pretentious like that. It's way too playful. Anyway.
