The process is the same
whether the support is paper, wood, or canvas. Seemingly endless applications
of paint represent ideas that have been edited out, scraped down, sanded
over, and covered by more ideas. Endless attempts to resolve the piece
are evident in the painting’s surface: the false starts, aborted ideas,
and painterly conceits that go nowhere. Once in a while when I am lucky
and/or patient, it happens . . . the piece takes shape, makes sense, is
finished -- that is, it separates from me. Although not always visible
in reproductions, the surfaces often contain irregularities, records of
experience contributing to the painting’s final state.
